Practices for Proper Car Maintenance During Winter

When the chilling season comes, it will most likely become harder to maintain your vehicle. However, with a few preventive measures, you can have your motor operating the same way it does during favourable conditions.

Here are some steps that you should take to prepare your machine for the cold months:

  1. Have your vehicle tuned up by a professional at least once a year to optimise its performance. At least three weeks before the winter season starts is the perfect time to do so in order to protect it from power outages that can occur due to bad weather conditions. This way, when you drive, you will not have to worry about your engine stopping. Also, doing this will give longer road life for your car.
  2. Inspect the battery and, if necessary, have it replaced. It is advisable to have this part changed to a better one at least one month before the cold months come. If not, this can result in poor engine start-up conditions.
  3. Replace the all the fluid. This is important because as the temperature becomes lower, it will become harder for the machine to lubricate its moving parts, which would likely cause wear-down on the internal equipment. For this, keep in mind that automobile components can handle lower grade oil better during the freezing weather. This is because the lighter the liquid, the less chances of viscoscity and sludge to develop.
  4. Maintain the anti-freeze levels. Using lots of water is ideal during the spring and summer months but not during the cold season. This can cause the radiator lines to freeze up and damage the operation. It is recommended to pour about 75 to 100% anti-freeze coolant.

The steps presented above may sound like they can ruin your holiday budget, but they are actually important if you wish to avoid road problems during this joyous time of year. In fact, you can even travel across Europe on your automobile as long as you do the presented steps and follow other important maintenance precautions.
